"My bride is wounded, and I am asking you to help her." This was the invitation the Serra Club of Spokane heard from their chaplain, Father Daniel Barnett, at a board meeting just before the beginning of Lent. “The Church, the bride of Christ, is suffering because of the sins of her members — all of her members. And all of us are called to help,” he observed.
Father Lucas Tomson, pastor of St. Thomas More Catholic Student Center at Washington State University, has served several parishes throughout the diocese since his ordination in 2007. During his time as a priest, Father Tomson has kept up his academic interests. In 2012, he began a doctorate at the Pontifical Lateran University while continuing his work as pastor at Our Lady of the Valley in Okanogan. Because of his keen interest in the works of St. Augustine of Hippo, Father Tomson chose to write his dissertation on the importance of others in our spiritual journey.
Planned Parenthood clinicians ask frightened and often ignorant young women, “Would you like us to restore your period?” Legislators in thrall to Big Abortion dollars vie to keep sidewalk counselors away from abortuaries, in order to maintain the pretense that what goes on inside those chop-shops involves no more than unwanted “tissue.”
Women are called to change the world and to stand up for human life. May is a wonderful month to reflect on the gift of women. A woman is able to become a mother because she literally has “room for another” within her body. On a spiritual level, all women are called to the vocation of motherhood in the sense of nurturing humanity by making “room for another” in her heart.

Although Zach and Cheri Mallahan met in second grade, their journey as a couple starts much later. Both grew up in Bellingham, Washington and attended Western Washington University. During their time at Western, they became involved with the Catholic Newman Center.
During Lent and Holy Week, the faithful across Eastern Washington were waving palms, chanting hosannas, praying the Stations of the Cross and hearing the Passion story proclaimed in our parishes. These rituals remind us that Christ truly did die and rise from the dead. Similarly, every 10 years, a ritual in a small Bavarian village in Germany reinforces the reality of God’s salvation in our lives.

It used to be easy to believe in Jesus when I was younger, but with all the suffering in the world and in my life, I just don’t know. Why is it harder for me now than when I was younger?

Deacon Raymond Kalema has always tried to pay attention to the needs of others. As a kid, he frequently asked himself how he could be the one to "fill the gap." The first time he asked himself this question, the answer was "become a priest."
