"Praying the Psalms"presented by Fr. Michael Guinan. The psalms are “the masterwork of prayer in the Old Testament” and they “remain essential to the prayer of the Church…They are suitable for people of every condition and time” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2585-86, 2597). From the very beginning of its history, the Church has used and prayed the psalms. The idea, then, of making a retreat with the psalms is a very logical and appropriate one. But the psalms come from the ancient world, a very different time with a very different culture; it can be very difficult at times to pray the psalms. After some general remarks on the psalms, in our retreat we will try to do two things: 1) to enter into the thought world, images, and themes central to the psalms; and 2) to relate to the psalms as prayers “for the ups, down, and in-betweens of life” (J. Craghan). A variety of psalms will be used to guide us in these efforts. “The better to achieve this ideal [of knowing Scripture better], let them take steps to improve their understanding of the liturgy and of the Bible, especially the psalms” (Vatican II, Decree on the Sacred Liturgy #90). Hopefully, this retreat will help us to pray the psalms with the Church in a more personal and meaningful way.
