    El diezmo (la décima parte) es propio del Antiguo Testamento. Estaba reservado antes que nada para los miembros de la tribu de Leví (sacerdotes y levitas), que, por dedicarse al culto, habían quedado sin parcela al repartirse la tierra de Canaán (Números 18,21-33; 2 Crónicas 31, 5-19). Después, estaba destinado también para ayudar a los más necesitados, especialmente las viudas y los huérfanos (Deuteronomio 26, 12-14). En el Nuevo Testamento no se habla del diezmo como medio para sostener económicamente a la Iglesia. Sin embargo, se hace hincapié en el espíritu de solidaridad. Algunos hasta llegan a vender sus bienes y propiedades para socorrer a las necesidades de los hermanos (Hechos 2,44-45).
